Public Computers

Users of the Center can find computers on all three floors, in the open areas, or the computer labs. All computers run Windows XP operating system, with standard applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Corel WordPerfect) installed. All of the computers also have CALI Lessons installed. Additional software (Adobe Acrobat, Transmedia Objections!) is installed on the computers in the PC Lab on the 1st floor.

The Center provides a large number of high-speed laser printers (usually one printer to four computers) and our students have the privilege to print and collect their documents almost immediately. The school currently does not charge for printing (many schools do), but the number of printed pages is carefully tracked for future decisions. We asks our students to use the printers as needed, but not to abuse them.

All of the computers have floppy disk drives, and most of them have CD-Writers installed. Computers in the carrousels on the second and first floor have 250MB ZIP drives, while computers in the PC Lab on the 1st floor have 100MB ZIP drives installed.

Electrical Outlets

If you plan to bring your own laptop, you will be happy to find that every seat in the Center is equipped with an electrical outlet.

Study Rooms

All study rooms of the Center are equipped with a computer. While you study with your group, you can write your paper, check your email, or search the Web.

In three of the study rooms you can also use one of the TV/VCR combo units to watch VHS tapes.

Can't open a file on your floppy disk? Are you having trouble printing a document? Then please see a member of the information technology staff for technical assistance and support with the Center's computers.

Scanning Services

There is one HP ScanJet 5500c scanner located in the room 117 for use by law students, faculty, and staff. This 48-bit color flatbed scanner has a maximum resolution of 2400 x 2400 dpi (optical) and is connected to a dedicated computer for scanning purposes. The scanner comes equipped with an automatic document feeder. Please see a staff member for assistance.

ScanSoft OmniPage 12 OCR software is installed on this computer which can be used to convert printed documents into Word, WordPerfect, and PDF format.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 is also available and can be used to save scanned images in JPG, GIF, and TIF file formats. Please see any member of our technical support staff for assistance with the scanner and OCR software. If you need to scan your transcript into MS Word format, follow these easy instructions.

The computer that is connected to the scanner is equipped with a CD-Writer.

LexisNexis and Westlaw Printers

LexisNexis and Westlaw have provided their own high-speed laser printers to be used when printing from these services. Printers are located in room 117 on the 1st floor of the Center, next to the PC Lab.

Students are asked to direct all printing jobs from LexisNexis and Westlaw to these dedicated printers. Please see our technical support staff for more information or to report problems with the Lexis and Westlaw printers.

Network Outlets for Laptops

There are a limited number of active network outlets on the 1st floor of the Center, which can be used by the students who have their laptops configured for use on the campus network. Carrels with power and network outlets are clearly labeled and may be used only by students who have their laptop registered with CTS.

University Computer Policies

Access to the network at Duquesne University is a privilege, not a right. In order to retain that privilege there are specific guidelines set forth by the Computing and Technology Services (CTS) of Duquesne University, that must always be followed.
